This essay offers a broad reconstruction of the main economic and social changes that characterized the history of the Republic of Genoa from the end of the sixteenth century to the mid-eighteenth century. Particular attention has been devoted to the institutional setting of this ancient-regime Italian state, and to exogenous shocks occurred during that period, trying to assess their impact on the economic structure, in both short and long-term run.
