In recent years, much attention has been devoted to the development of technologies suitable for the remediation of environmental contaminations. Aim of this chapter is to review the approaches proposed for the treatment of contaminated soils, focusing in particular to those based on electrokinetic phenomena. Several different physicochemical mechanisms can be exploited when aiming at the remediation of soils and sediments contaminated with inorganic and organic pollutants. This chapter presents a discussion on the fundamentals, and then on the applicability of the electrokinetic remediation approach for the removal of different contaminants, finally presenting some mathematical modelling that have been developed to describe the process of soil remediation.
