In this paper, the economic and environmental assessment of a system composed by a flexible pilot facility for testing, as a living test-bed laboratory, the performance of several configurations of smart microgrids is presented. Novel technologies such as flexible demand systems have been included. This facility has been installed at the Campus de Vegazana, from the Universidad de León (Spain) and is managed by the Electric Engineering Area staff. After performing a brief review of the involved technologies and the smart microgrid concept, a complete analysis of the facilities is shown. The analysis includes not only the facilities' description, but also the evaluation of operational costs and CO2 emissions and a selection of 19 techno-economic key performance indicators (KPIs).
