The focus of this paper is an analisys of the figure of the whitches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth on the basis of their historical sources: the second edition of the Holinshed’s Chronicles (1587), John Bellenden’s Croniklis of Scotland (1536) and Hector Boece’s Historiagentis scotorum (1527). In particular are here examined their role and their function within the drama’s framework as well as their repercussion on lady Macbeth’s character.
