This paper will focus on lack of communication and on the turning upside down of the idea of death, with particular reference to Lawrence's novelette The Fox and his short essay “With the Guns”, published in 1914 in the back cover of The Manchester Guardian and signed H.D. Lawence. The violent death of the female character in The Fox has been very controversial. This paper discusses its connection with the mad atmosphere and the turning upside down of all values in the war years. During World War I Europe turns into a dark place where humanism comes to an end and the life of the community (for those who survive) is hanging in a vacuunm.

Abstract
