The essay takes into consideration the literary picture of Croesus, the last king of Lydia (560-546 BC), focusing on the well-known episode in Herodotus’ Histories (I 29- 33) about his dialogue with Solon about human happiness. The aim is to highlight the reasons behind his transformation, in the following tradition, from a mighty king to a grotesque character.

Abstract
