In this study I will focus on the analysis of readers’ reactions to two articles published online by two national dailies in France and Italy (Le Figaro and La Repub-blica), respectively on January 16 and 17, 2017, which deal with the use of French and Italian language by politicians. I will move to the contrastive analysis of readers’ comments (383 for Le Figaro, 389 for La Repubblica) with the aim of observe, first, the divergences and convergences between Italian and French speakers in relation to the linguistic norm, and then the possible evolutions of the ordinary metalinguistic discourse circulating in a “space” characterized by the blurring of the boundaries between profane linguistic and scholarly discourse and through changes in the relationship between journalists and read-ers (Calabrese, 2014; Calabrese and Rosier, 2016
