L’edizione critica dei cosiddetti Excerpta Constantiniana de legationibus Romanorum. Problemi filologici e risorse di metodo

The so-called Excerpta Historica Constantiniana were a huge Byzantine collection, most of which is now lost; the remains are living a revival of interest to scholars and related issues are debated more and more widely. The article focusses on selection criteria, possible literary criteria, reliability of the transmitted texts as regards wording, linguistic and stylistic layers, imitation of Polybius. A relevant case study deals with the repetition of the narration about the Roman embassy to Carthago in 218 b.C., which is reported both from Polybius and from Appianus in the volume of the Excerpta Constantiniana de Legationibus Romanorum, as well as from Diodorus in the volume of the Excerpta Constantiniana de Sententiis. Reasons and purposes of the choice are addressed and investigated to assess range and scope of the Polybian imitation in the Byzantine collection.

Gli Excerpta Constantiniana, monumentale antologia storica di X secolo voluta da Costantino VII Porfirogenito, ci sono testimoniati da scarsi lacerti di grande valore. Nell’articolo si evidenzia l’importanza dello studio della raccolta degli Excerpta de Legationibus Romanorum ad Gentes (ELR), non solo per i bizantinisti ma anche per gli storici e gli studiosi che si avvicinano ai singoli passi/autori altrimenti perduti. Nelle pieghe del testo frammentario, infatti, si può ravvisare una pluralità di messaggi storici, politici, religiosi e letterari, che solo una visione d’insieme consente di collegare tra loro. In particolare, si affrontano i seguenti aspetti degli ELR: 1. Affidabilità del testo; 2. Stratificazione linguistico-stilistica; 3. Polibianesimo. Nella tensione tra modelli ellenistici, autori imperiali-tardoantichi-bizantini ed excerptores si trova il terreno forse più fecondo di questa indagine, che può portare a rivalutare i problemi filologici fino a considerarli delle vere e proprie risorse a servizio della ricerca.
