Genetically different languages exhibit chance resemblances in lexicon; this holds true for place-names as well. Since diachronically stratified linguistic areas usually preserve at least some place-names from any of their strata, these strata can in turn exhibit chance resemblances in place-names. Place-names of seemingly sure Latin or Romance origin can therefore correctly reflect a Pre-Roman etymon as well; the etymological investigation of any place-name cannot be complete without taking into consideration every possibility, including substrates and superstrates. In toponymy, all strata are equal and there’s no privilege for languages that have historically prevailed; alternative etymologies can in such cases be evaluated according to a set of probabilistic criteria. Fresh etymologies for 40 place-names and surnames are inserted.
