This present response analyzes and brings to light the importance of the historiographic contribution of Joseph Ratzinger’s bonaventurian writings. Having recently appeared in an Italian edition, in a volume of the author’s Opera omnia that integrates the same critical edition that came out in Germany in 2009, these writings have profoundly renewed the historiographic debate regarding the Franciscan thinker throughout the course of the twentieth century. Moreover, these writings have contributed to a deeper comprehension and a more considerate placement of his thought within the cultural panorama of his time. In the response, three relevant aspects of the reflection of Bonaventure are taken into consideration, upon which the interpretative theses of Ratzinger are particularly fruitful and stimulating: the concept of revelation; his relation to the thought of Joachim of Fiore; his conception of philosophy and his relationship to the work of Aristotle.
