Energy generation and distribution in ports is like an INTERNET of energy flows to be optimally managed, it is a target that requires terminal operators and port authorities to be aware of how energy is used, which and how operations are carried out and from where energy comes or is sold. Energy service management for electrical distribution systems in ports must be carried out in a safe way, exploiting all the technological developments, reducing cost and emissions, and increasing revenues for the port authority. Even if the electrical infrastructure of port areas was or is a (partially) uncoordinated system, it needs to be operated in an integrated way with a common goal while leaving a certain degree of flexibility and freedom to each customer (either generator or load point). This helps acceptance and cooperation to maintain a constant level of optimized operations. A micro smart grid together with a cluster of nano-grids is able to work out all the requirements and provide early and ongoing technical and economic benefits. Furthermore, a hierarchical decentralized control structure such as the one suggested is well suited to efficiently perform the various tasks, maintaining a level of independence and best fitting the user profile preferences. Energy service management of port areas can be carried out as an opportunity for economic business for the port authorities and for customers.

Smart Micro-Grid: An Effective Tool for Energy Management in Ports
