This article provides an overview on policies and strategies that have been developed in order to perform a better and greener freight delivery in urban areas. Some policies that have been developed for the regulation of freight traffic will be firstly exposed. Afterwards, the main aspects about innovative chain retailing operations in urban areas will be exposed, with particular reference to the loading and unloading centres. Finally, the main characteristics of innovative loading units to improve the performance of freight delivery, such as small containers, will be exposed.

Abstract
