Intorno al bello

The book About the Beautiful is a selection of aesthetic essays written by the eminent Polish philosopher Władysław Stróżewski (born 1933). In his works he fruitfully joined elements of the Thomist tradition, Platonism and Medieval thought (developed at Lublin’s philosophical school) with reflections near to the analytical approach and Władysław Tatarkiewicz’s researches on the history of ideas, with phenomenology in the form inspi¬red by Roman Ingarden as well as with original aesthetical experiences in the field of arts, chiefly of music (Chopin, Lutosławski), painting and poe¬try (Cyprian Norwid). This peculiar conjunction points at the fecundity of a “dialogue among philosophies” even distant in time and orientation, at the importance of an effort of grounding current problematizations on an¬cient and classical heritage, and at mutual integration and support of phi¬losophical investigation and analysis of artworks. Such a linkage con¬fronts with the challenges of contemporary aesthetical perception and aesthetical thought a position which is deeply rooted in tradition and em¬phasizes the inescapable relevance of the Beautiful in its connections with the Good and the Truth and hence within the horizon of objective values and an ultimate Sense. The book is enriched by a Foreword by the Italian philosopher Angela Ales Bello, professor at the Lateran University in Rome and founder of the Italian Centre for Phenomenological Researches.
