Starting from Walter Benjamin’s consternation faced with the works of the Collège de Sociologie, and from the apparent political “double life” of some important thinkers of the 20th century, the paper explores a subtle genealogical affinity between fascism and the libertarianutopian-communist revolution. Troublesome as it feels, this affinity stems from a common background in Romanticism, and needs be deeply researched if we refuse to abandon the possibility of an anti-modern critic of the contemporary world. More specifically, the paper enquires different attitudes towards the possibility, and the means, to re-enchant the world.

Abstract

Starting from Walter Benjamin’s consternation faced with the works of the Collège de Sociologie, and from the apparent political “double life” of some important thinkers of the 20th century, the paper explores a subtle genealogical affinity between fascism and the libertarianutopian-communist revolution. Troublesome as it feels, this affinity stems from a common background in Romanticism, and needs be deeply researched if we refuse to abandon the possibility of an anti-modern critic of the contemporary world. More specifically, the paper enquires different attitudes towards the possibility, and the means, to re-enchant the world.
