Medicinal plants and their preparations have been widely used for hundreds of years all over the world, both as single herbs or as a combination of several herbs in composite formulae, traditionally extracted in boiling water. Different bioactive compounds (botanicals) are present in these species and their derived-products as key components: all these molecules are known to be quite variable in the plant material, according to intraspecific chemodiversity, different harvest stage or cultivation area, and post-harvest handling. Most studies have focused on the use of plant parts for the extraction of phytochemicals and for the preparation of phytotherapic products.
