Mezzi visuali per le passioni retoriche: le scenografie dell'oratoria

The Latin oratory uses a wide range of visual supports: in addition to the speaker's body, whose gestures are detailed in the manuals of rhetoric in the section relating to the actio, the speaker, like a shrewd dramatist, can use the body of one's own client or that of the adversary; the presence of cadavers; visual supports taken from the surrounding environment; 'props' such as bloody swords and robes; books, registers and varied documentation, imagines and pictures found in various ways. All these visual tools, often very similar to theatrical props, are cleverly used by the orators in order to arouse the affections in the audience.

L'oratoria latina si serve di una vasta gamma di supporti visuali: oltre al corpo dell'oratore, la cui gestualità è dettagliatamente normata dai manuali di retorica nella sezione relativa all'actio, l'oratore, come un accorto drammaturgo, può servirsi del corpo del proprio cliente o di quello dell'avversario; dell'ostensione di cadaveri; di supporti visuali tratti dall'ambiente circostante; di 'oggetti di scena' come spade e vesti insanguinate; di libri, registri e documentazione varia, di imagines reperite in vari modi. Tutti questi visual tools, spesso assai simili a props teatrali, vengono abilmente utilizzati dagli oratori al fine di suscitare gli affetti nel pubblico.
