Abstract

Many scholars credit the poets of the Mamlūk period with making the real problems of society the focus of their work in poetry, the most important genre in Arabic literature. Many poems of that period deal with social and political themes, often with vital matters for the common people, such as corruption, poverty and social discrimination. This paper discusses the poetry of social and political commitment during the Mamlūk period in Cairo, describes its context and defines important recurrent themes.
