Argument of the study is the use of reported speech in German present-day lan-guage and its presentation in various grammar workbooks for students of Ger-man as a foreign language. The article focuses in particular on the use of the three verbal moods (indicative, subjunctive I, subjunctive II) and the stylistic and semantic interpretation of their usage in written and oral speech. After an overview about the positions of scientific grammars a thorough critical analysis of this argument as it is brought out in a number of representative students grammar books will be conducted. Objective of the study is to present a pro-posal how to integrate the complex manners of usage of the verbal moods in re-ported speech in an comprehensive way in grammar books for German as a for-eign language.
