The marble gothic statue of Saint Andrew, actually on display in the right nave of Sant'Andrea in Pistoia, but originally conceived for the lunette of the romanesque main portal of the church, was published in 1908 by Adolfo Venturi as a work by Giovanni Pisano, but it hasn't ever exhaustively analyzed. This paper traces the history of studies concerning the statue, emphasizes unusual aspects of its iconography and location and tries to precise its chronology in relation to the history of Pistoia between Due and Trecento. It also proposes to recognize it as an early work by the Sienese Tino di Camaino, who had previously worked in his own city under the direction of Giovanni Pisano.
