In order to shield democracy from the "disfigurements" of epistocracy and populism, Nadia Urbinati characterizes democratic government as a procedural diarchy founded on the principle of equal liberty, in which the role of epistemic criteria of correctness and of the principle of popular control is significantly downplayed. While fully endorsing her worries and her analysis of democracy's disfigurements, I suggest that there is no need to curtail democracy's ideal in such a way, and indeed epistemic criteria of correctness and popular control are called for by the very idea of political liberty.

Abstract

In order to shield democracy from the "disfigurements" of epistocracy and populism, Nadia Urbinati characterizes democratic government as a procedural diarchy founded on the principle of equal liberty, in which the role of epistemic criteria of correctness and of the principle of popular control is significantly downplayed. While fully endorsing her worries and her analysis of democracy's disfigurements, I suggest that there is no need to curtail democracy's ideal in such a way, and indeed epistemic criteria of correctness and popular control are called for by the very idea of political liberty.
