Copenhagen, GKS 1663 4to, a composite manuscript dating back to the end of the 15th century (fol. 207-225) and the early 16th century (fol. 1-206 and 226-241), is a collection of Low German medical and mainly surgical texts (Cordes 1983: 370) including, among others, a fragment of a translation of Hans von Gersdorff’s Feldtbuch der Wundarzney (Dat velt bock), Dat kinder bock, a collection of recipes for the preparation of unguents and a practica (Borchling 1900: 53). As previous research on the Velt bock has shown, the manuscript must have been compiled by a competent scribe – maybe a surgeon – who collected a series of interesting texts making them available for his own later consultation. In this study, the alphabetically ordered Latin-Low German glossary on medical terms and phrases on fol. 179r-204r is taken into consideration paying attention not only to the selection of the Latin headwords and the choice of their vernacular rendering(s), but also to their relation to the medical and surgical terminology employed in the texts included in Copenhagen, GKS 1663 4to. Furthermore, the possible dependence from other existing reference works and, in particular, from the three glossaries (anatomy, pathology and medical herbs) in addendum to Hans von Gersdorff’s Feldtbuch der Wundarzney is investigated, in order to ascertain to what extent the compiler of Copenhagen, GKS 1663 4to integrated his sources with his own experience and knowledge.
