Abstract

The archaeological site of Pompeii suffers a critical and pathological lack of maintenance that increases its vulnerabilitytonaturaldecayagents. In some cases the situation is further worsened by improper restorations conflicting with characteristics of ancientstructures. The extension of the site and the various conditions of conservation and of sensibility of the structures requireasuitableevaluationofriskconditionstoidentifythebestinterventionstrategies. Pompeii lives in a permanent state of emergency; for this reason, common knowledge activities (3D survey, laboratory analysis etc. ) cannot be applied. It’snecessary to set up specific procedures and instruments, at the same time fast and efficient, to evaluate the situation and to determinate the urgency and the intervention priorities. Starting from precedent experiences, developed by authors, on the site, the item presents a new tool, for UrgencyFastInspection, toregistertheresultsandtodefine: • priorityandinterventionsaccordingtostateofconservationofbuildings • worksneededtoensureusabilityandsafety • preventiveactivities, diagnosticsandmonitoringtoensureassetpreservation • suggestedmaintenanceandadvicetoimprovingaccessibility andsuitabilityforinspection The inspection team consists of an archeologist (specialist in context’s age and buildings' archaeology), a technologist (architect or engineer expert in historical building techniques, materials and decay analysis), a builder(specializedinhistoricbuildings).
