Abstract

Among the reasons behind the unanimous accusations of decadence flung against the poetic production of the Mamlūk and Ottoman periods we find the poets’ passion towards an excessive and affected use of rhetorical devices. During that period, artifice was considered art per se and represented the battleground for authors who wished to boast their linguistic and prosodic mastery and superiority as well as their vast knowledge. This article sheds light on the importance of albadī‘ in the Mamlūk poetic production, with particular consideration of ǧinās (paronomasia), and draws attention to the stylistic and expressive function which the poet or writer intended his work to take on.
