This article analyses the role played by theology and philosophy in the pursuit of the Truth in Francisco de Vitoria’s work. According to the Dominican master, the realm of theological knowledge should not accept the Holy Scriptures alone, and should not use reason alone: indeed for a theologian, auctoritas and ratio are the necessary sources of reference. For Vitoria, reason has to intervene to draw theological conclusions and to bring in rational evidence related to the revealed Truth or, more simply, to define how the Truths have an intimate affinity with reason. For Vitoria in fact, reason is, in broad terms, revelation, and as a divine gift, must not be forgotten, let alone negated.

Abstract
This article analyses the role played by theology and philosophy in the pursuit of the Truth in Francisco de Vitoria’s work. According to the Dominican master, the realm of theological knowledge should not accept the Holy Scriptures alone, and should not use reason alone: indeed for a theologian, auctoritas and ratio are the necessary sources of reference. For Vitoria, reason has to intervene to draw theological conclusions and to bring in rational evidence related to the revealed Truth or, more simply, to define how the Truths have an intimate affinity with reason. For Vitoria in fact, reason is, in broad terms, revelation, and as a divine gift, must not be forgotten, let alone negated.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
