We study the following problem: given an L-function F(s) and a twist F(s,f) of F(s), when is F(s,f) again an L-function? In such a case, F(s,f) is called an internal twist. We solve the problem for a certain family of nonlinear twists and a rather general class of L-functions.

Abstract
