The article suggests a consideration on the utility and effectiveness of augmented reality's applications in tourism field. After having introduced the variety of contexts where this technology is used and the economic market value linked to the expected diffusion of augmented reality, it takes into consideration the support that it is able to offer to the tourism and territorial promotion, through a range of Italian casestudies. The conclusive part highlights strenghts and weaknesses of augmented reality and remarks on the new digital divides which come from unequal productions of places' augmented contents.
