A numerical model has been set up in order to simulate both the steady-state and dynamic behaviour of a combined cycle power plant. The present article deals, in particular, with the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and describes both the mathematical and the simulation model, implemented in Matlab/Simulink® environment. The simulator can predict the internal working parameters for both exhaust gas and steam by evaluating the heat balances between exhaust gas and water/steam in the HRSG. The boiler model has been included in the whole plant dynamic simulator so that it is possible to plot the most important output variables as the gas and steam electrical power outputs and the plant global efficiency, in steady-state and transient conditions. The present paper describes the simulation model validation phase and the effects of a typical gas turbine transient on the HRSG dynamic behaviour are also analysed
