The aim of this paper is to investigate the different approaches and strategies adopted in the relations within the public sphere by the business organization operating in the hotel sector, that is the Società Italiana degli Albergatori (Italian Hoteliers Association, hereafter SIA). Based on several unpublished sources, from both private and public archives, and the SIA’s official publications (newspapers, conference proceedings, etc.), the paper concerns the period from the end of the 19th century (when SIA was established) to the fall of the fascist regime. It should be noted that although the SIA was a sectorial business association, it progressively gained an even more relevance within the Italian context. This was due to the fact that from the end of the 19th century onward, tourism, and consequently the hotel sector, gave an ever increasing contribution to the Country’s economy. Created in 1899, the SIA interacted at both national and local level, trying to influence administrative and political decisions; it dealt with municipal authorities and the government, by adopting different strategies which led to several successes but also to some failures, of which we will try to understand the reasons. Particular attention will be paid to the new ways of action and means used after the political and institutional changes caused by the fascist dictatorship.
