A gradient-based optimization method for minimization of the total drag of an airfoil is presented. The viscous drag is minimized by delaying the laminarturbulent transition. The gradients are obtained solving the adojoint of the Euler, boundary-layer and stability equations. The optimization is subjected to constraints such as restrictions on geometry, lift and pitch moment. Abstract

The geometry is parametrised using radial basis functions. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
