The paper looks at some meta-linguistic statements made by transcultural authors writing in German that reflect the depth of their thoughts on language and languages. In concrete terms this involves an analysis of some lectures on poetics (by Ilma Rakusa, Ilija Trojanow, Yoko Tawada and Vladimir Vertlib), commentaries and relevant interviews. The expectation is thus confirmed that the foreign or distant look determined by multilingualism generates attitudes to language which, on the one hand, heighten literary creativity (as, for example, in the use of puns), and, on the other, involve the critical deconstruction of the authors’ chosen language through an approach to lexis and idioms that emphasises their literal meaning and etymology.
