The articles describes the most recent evolution of the USA healthcare model. Historically based on the action of nonprofit actors according to the subsidiarity principle, the USA healthcare system is experimenting an increasing role of for-profit organisations, that through M&A are expanding their position in healthcare market. In this framework, the article discusses the reasons of this trend and the possible consequences in terms of sustainability of the system as a whole, suggesting the importance of this phenomenon from the point of view of the European countries, that, on the basis of the subsidiarity principle, are now reforming their welfare systems.

Abstract

The articles describes the most recent evolution of the USA healthcare model. Historically based on the action of nonprofit actors according to the subsidiarity principle, the USA healthcare system is experimenting an increasing role of for-profit organisations, that through M&A are expanding their position in healthcare market. In this framework, the article discusses the reasons of this trend and the possible consequences in terms of sustainability of the system as a whole, suggesting the importance of this phenomenon from the point of view of the European countries, that, on the basis of the subsidiarity principle, are now reforming their welfare systems.
