The article is focused on the political value of a metaphor used by Plutarch in his essay entitled Ad principem ineruditum (780A-781 A). He compares the king to the sun and says that as the sun is a sort of image of god, also the king has to be the same. If the king wants to be, for his subjects, like the sun and consequently as god, he must be virtuous. When Plutarch writes, it flourishes the debate concerning the figure of the king and the borders of the king's power and he, as his contemporaries Pliny and Dion Chrysostom, does not avoid being involved in it. I analyze his position, in order to underline some aspects of his idea about the monocratic power.
