This article aims at analyzing the political problem of the monocratic power in the four Discourse on Kingship of Dio Chrysostom. Particularly the work is focused on the role and the position of Dio in the debate concerning the good ruler that flourishes in Rome in the last decades of the I century A.D. Dio, whose educational background is completely linked to the Hellenic tradition, tries to show an image of the emperor like the kings of the Hellenistic reigns. In his political thought the education of the governor is the key able to avoid that the monocratic power can be corrupted; the Greek paidéia must become the mean through which the philosopher can show to the princeps how he has to rightly handle his power.
