A key factor in the vulnerabilities of risks for communication errors during pediatric emergency is a lack of standardized communication tools (refs) in accountability to patient safety. Such tools are critical in the regulatory statutes of clinical practice that underlies the communication of interventions regarding the patient (Situation), the clinical setting (Background), the issues (Assessment) and interventions during admission and/or transfer (Recommendation). Thereby, the elements of Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation, known as SBAR technique in the patient safety field, constitute crucial content and process dimensions in effective communications. Although SBAR is known conceptually in the literature, research is sparse on its applicability as a communication tool to decrease risks, particularly in a high vulnerability patient care context, one of which is pediatric emergencies. Furthermore, the association of SBAR to the regulatory practice of relational communications during pediatric emergencies is unclear. Given these gaps in nursing knowledge and practice, this study will investigate the efficacy of SBAR as a communication tool of patient safety by demonstrating its relevance to regulatory practice in the standardization of relational communications during pediatric emergencies. The overall purpose of this project is to apply and validate the SBAR technique as a communication tool and evaluate its outcomes, which will provide evidence of its relevance to regulatory practice during triage of children in the emergency department.
