In the evaluation of the impact of shipping noise on the environment, a core problem is represented by an effective characterisation of the ship source.This process is codified in recently issued measurement standards, where indications about the number of transducers, their arrangement, the operative and environmental test conditions and the procedure for processing the results are provided. The practical realisation of these procedures is, however, subjected to a number of problems and uncertainties, affecting the final result. A detailed analysis of such uncertainties was performed on a set of experimental data recorded during a noise survey carried out in the framework of the collaborative project SILENV-Ships oriented Innovative soLutions to rEduce Noise & Vibrations, funded by the E.U. through Grant Agreement SCP8-GA-2009-234182. The survey is a part of an experimental campaign that was aimed at collecting data on the underwater noise emissions of different kind of ships.
