Abstract

Confined environments are particular biotopes of high scientific concern. The rockpools, owing to the peculiarity of their vegetal and animal population, are an important research subject in ecology, genetics and physiology, and particularly for studies concerning adaptation phenomena. In the rockpools live organisms adapted to hold out in extreme conditions caused by sudden salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen fluctuations. Among the organisms inhabiting mediterranean rockpools, the Harpacticoid Copepod Tigriopus fulvus is particularly interesting. On the ground of a number of studies, several news concerning biology and adaptive mechanisms of this Copepod living solely in this environment, are here reported.
