Basic principles of two complementary diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to depressive condition in childhood and adolescence are presented: the first one, based on the dynamic-structural analysis, with reference to some foundamental phenomenological concepts; and the second, based on the more significant data of biological psychiatry, concerning ''depression'' in developmental age, particularly in adolescence. EEG sleep study seems the most reliable, especially to identify the depressive conditions potentially responsive to imipramine therapy, marked by a reduction of the latency of REM phase. Preliminary data concerning 27 patients are presented.
