In November 1978, a patient with serious recurrent chronic pancreatitis underwent a total pancreatectomy (95% pancreatic resection). The pancreas, resected, was transplanted into the thigh anastomosing the splenic vessels to the femoral vessels. The results were quite favourable: abdominal and back pains together with diarrhoea disappeared, while his appetite revived. There was an increase in his body weight; sugar and insulin levels were back to pretreatment levels. Two other cases of pancreatic autotransplantation following 95% pancreatectomy for relapsing chronic pancreatitis were treated with similar results.
