Abstract

Regardless of the evolutions in the 20th century's physics, the idea that the fundamental level of reality is intrinsically simple continues to be active in the scientific and general demeanour, contributing to the maintain of the determinist paradigm both in biology and in common sense. Consonant with the market logics that regulate access to funds, and to wider societal choices, the determinist paradigm looks nonetheless ramshackle when confronted to the biological researches carried out in the last 20 years. The low number of genes in the human genome; the splicing mechanism; the epigenetic regulation; the discovery of homeobox genes; the "evolution of evolution"; the data on the variability among species and environments: this wealth of new data seem to point towards the possibility of a non-deterministic biology.
