This introduction to the research project “The First Translations of Machiavelli's Prince” surveys the translations of Il Principe in European and peri-European languages from the 16th to the first half of the 19th century. On the basis of the different cultural and political situations of the countries involved, two groups are identified. It is pointed out how each translation represents more than a simple recodification in a different language and also how each plays an important role in the understanding and reception of The Prince.

Abstract
This introduction to the research project “The First Translations of Machiavelli's Prince” surveys the translations of Il Principe in European and peri-European languages from the 16th to the first half of the 19th century.
