A common set of topoi emerges by comparing the Mediterranean's stage of Odisseus's tour with the geographical stage of Mackinder's geopolitical narrative. First of all is the use of geographical description for building a world image ideologically reflecting the identity of the power. The second one is the reference to war like the topos around which both geographical narratives move. This parallel allows us to emphasize the important function of the geographical representation and rhetoric, in order to influence collective consciousness to recognise itself with the "linear perspective" of the power.

Abstract

A common set of topoi emerges by comparing the Mediterranean's stage of Odisseus's tour with the geographical stage of Mackinder's geopolitical narrative. First of all is the use of geographical description for building a world image ideologically reflecting the identity of the power. The second one is the reference to war like the topos around which both geographical narratives move. This parallel allows us to emphasize the important function of the geographical representation and rhetoric, in order to influence collective consciousness to recognise itself with the "linear perspective" of the power.
