The ancient lime kilns are important examples of productive architecture and are widespread throughout Italy. Until now little or nothing has been done to bring them to public attention and use them to best advantage. The lime kilns census and cataloguing project, organised by the Italian Lime Forum in collaboration with the Italian Association for Industrial Archeological Heritage, is aimed at identifying and georeferencing the sites and kilns that have historically been used to produce lime in Italy. The first step towards protecting these sites is knowing where they are, and this is the reasoning behind the census proposed , the ideal objective of which is to identify a number of sites of particular importance in Italy that may usefully be exploited through, for example, the creation of eco-museums dedicated to lime, able to illustate the complex cultural fabric that binds together the elements typical of a particular area: environmental, landscape, architectural, historical and economic features, etc.
