Abstract. Mathematics and design are in truth not really worlds so wide apart as it is normally thought. One factor that they actually have in common is creativity, the capability of thinking sideways which allows one to take untrodden paths in the search for unexpected solutions. The subject of this paper originated in the participation in the International Graphic Contest for the Creation of the Logo of “Assisi Mosaic 2009”. An unusual “mathematical reading” of the brief of the competition has brought us to develop a graphic project that lies between creativity and science: on the one hand a cultural event whose purpose is summarized in one word, mosaic, on the other hand one of the more surprising geometric objects, the Penrose aperiodic tessellation.
