Abstract

In the Middle Ages, the distinction between doctors and surgeons was not clear. As time passed, however, doctors started to attend Universities, to earn a degree, and to form Colleges of Doctors, for the preservation of their rights. Surgeons, together with barbers, joined together into a workers’ Guild. Surgeons were submitted to the authority of doctors. They had an inferior status, as they dedicated themselves to manual activities, as doctors, on the other hand, were provided with a philosophical and naturalistic culture, did not treat wounds directly and did not perform surgical operations. In Italy, the union between doctors and surgeons took place only in the XIX century.
