The present paper studies the wind-excited response of harbor crane structural elements by applying the gust effect factor technique. Since this coefficient has been defined for slender-line vertical structures, the study of the response of this particular structural typology requires a new definition of the element geometry and kinematics and of the external load. The proposed procedure is preliminarily applied to a circular diagonal structural element of a real harbor crane under forced conditions. The results obtained show that classical calculation procedures, based on the gust response factor technique (calibrated on displacements), can lead to an overestimate of the structural response near the constraints.
