This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of tourism in the Liguria region, the so-called “Italian Riviera”. In the first part we consider qualitative and quantitative changes in tourism demand from the 1850s to the 1980s. In the second part we analyse the development of practices and services specifically targeted at low-income social groups, such as holiday seaside settlements. We dedicate particular attention to the transition from health tourism to tourism with an ever increasing social significance.

Abstract

This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of tourism in the Liguria region, the so-called “Italian Riviera”. In the first part we consider qualitative and quantitative changes in tourism demand from the 1850s to the 1980s. In the second part we analyse the development of practices and services specifically targeted at low-income social groups, such as holiday seaside settlements. We dedicate particular attention to the transition from health tourism to tourism with an ever increasing social significance.
