The present work has been developed under a thesis work in cooperation with the “Comunità Montana Argentea”. The GIS is used as a tool for the analysis, management and optimization of wilderness walking paths in relation to shelter’s location. The procedure evaluates the accessibility to territory away from urban centres, calculating the walking costs on and off paths, by some scripts that analyse the morphological parameters of terrain deductible from Digital Terrain Model (DTM) as well as thematic maps affiliates. Because of a great number of parameters, particular importance is given to the testing and calibration phase, carried out by comparing the values evaluated with new implemented modules with values derived from commonly used algorithms and from other empirical surveys. The module, written in a Bash language and available in an user-friendly and simple interface, represents a useful tool for planning the recovery and inclusion of shelters in the paths network and new connections to integrate new interesting points.
