The purpose of in situ tests on deep foundations is to check the adequacy of pile-soil system for the designed loads, considering that cast-in-place piles may be subjected to necking, inclusions or surface voids in concrete. On the other hand, it is unrealistic to perform static load tests on all the piles of a major structure. Therefore, the Authors analyzed the reliability of a widely used nondestructive techique, the sonic pulse echo test, in assessing the pile integrity, relying on the results of 344 tests on piles of large diameter (800 mm) and on extensive subsurface investigations. Moreover, the Authors performed a laboratory campaign, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of sonic pulse echo tests in individuating shaft defects, both in terms of location and extent, and hence in directing a selective structural repair.
