The authors studied the hospitalizations of persons with respiratory illnesses upon the four-month period December-March during each of two periods of epidemic influenza (1988/89 and 1989/90) and one non-epidemic reference period (1987/88). Excess hospitalization was significant only for persons were 64 years of age or older in December-March 1989/90. The hospitalizations for influenza permitted to estimate the economic damage.
