In the second half of the 19th century, with the increased income and leisure time, pleasure boating started emerging as a new sector of maritime economy. The Riviera Ligure, with its mild climate and its strategic position in the north coast of the Mediterranean sea, became one of the preferred destination for yachtsmen of the upper class. During the first decades of the 20th century, several commercial and fishing ports of the Ligurian coast began to reserve wide portions of available moorings to this specific sector: this produced substantial changes in harbour facilities and in the life of the small seaside resorts of the Riviera. After World War II, a progressive development of pleasure boating took place in Italy, with a certain delay when compared to other European Countries: an increasing number of boats looked at the Riviera as their destination, so creating a large demand for berths which until now has not been completely satisfied. The aim of this paper is to examine the connections between the development of pleasure boating in Italy, the building of yacht harbours and Marinas in Liguria and their impact on regional economy during the 20th century.
